We are looking for an excellent researcher with great potential to develop an internationally recognized research agenda in the field of artificial intelligence for multimodal data. The Institute for Medical Informatics, Statistics and Documentation conducts research in the clinical medical environment. The focus is on harnessing and using clinical data for research, teaching and patient care. This involves developing and evaluating tools and methods for IT and biostatistics, from data collection to processing to statistical analysis. In addition, the institute has an extensive network of national and international partners in science and industry that can be relied upon to promote innovative projects as well as interdisciplinary exchange. The initial appointment is limited to six years. After the conclusion of a qualification agreement, the career advancement goal is to transfer to a tenured position as an associate professor (tenure track professor pursuant to § 99 para. 5 and 6 of the Universities Act). If the candidate demonstrates outstanding and remarkable achievements, the qualification agreement may be fulfilled more quickly.

Core duties and responsibilities:

• Conducting cutting-edge basic and applied research in the field of machine learning for multimodal medical data, with an emphasis on real-world health care and biomedical research data
• Developing AI-based solutions for processing structured and unstructured clinical data such as images, texts and molecular data
• Supporting the planning and implementation of a flexible, effective, sustainable and safe AI platform
• Producing high-quality scientific publications on a regular basis in the field of artificial intelligence for multimodal data
• Leading an internationally recognized research group and acquiring third-party funding
• Networking through national and international research collaborations
• Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising diploma and PhD students and mentoring and promoting young researchers
• Supporting scientific and public outreach in the research area

Successful candidates must have the following qualifications:

• PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in informatics, computer science, data science or a related field
• Profound research expertise in at least two of the following areas: (1) large language models, (2) data science and statistics, (3) classical machine learning and (4) neural approaches
• Proven track record of high-quality publications
• Peer-reviewed research grants or other third-party funding as a lead or principal investigator
• Previous experience in teaching and/or (co)supervising pre- and postgraduate students
• Postdoctoral research fellowship abroad or at a different institution than where the PhD was completed
• Experience in project management with respect to implementation of AI tools
• High level of proficiency in written and spoken English (equivalent to proficiency level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
• Proficiency in German sufficient for teaching at the Medical University of Graz and participating in university committees (to be acquired within three years of the start of employment)
